Macmillan Education provides world class content in the most relevant, engaging and flexible formats to support students, teachers and institutions through a lifetime of learning. Macmillan Education produces content for English Language Teaching (ELT) and for Schools curricula around the world whilst Palgrave Higher Education develops and distributes textbooks, e-books and interactive e-learning resources primarily for University-level students.


Content Development Manager


Location: London or Madrid (hybrid working)


The Content Development Manager manages a content development team to deliver the publishing plan, managing the available resources to ensure that projects are delivered on time, to budget and in line with market and customer expectations.


The team will work on content for our ELT coursebook series across segments, including student’s books, workbooks, teacher’s books and ancillary components, ensuring that the content is developed for publication in a variety of formats.


An important part of the role is to develop efficient content development practices and tools that allow us to achieve our delivery dates and ensuring the team has the necessary training and skills to develop quality materials in print or digital.


Team Management


  • Leads a Content Development team to manage the content development process, ensuring products are developed in line with the principles and pedagogical framework defined by Publishing Strategy and Concept team.
  • Ensure the pedagogical integrity of blended print and digital content to drive better learning outcomes and user experiences
  • Oversee the appropriate allocation of resources to and expertise for each project.
  • Content management and project tracking: provides updates to wider project team(s) on status to ensure on-time delivery and risk escalation.
  • Ensures content schedule is aligned with project schedule, liaising with key stakeholders to mitigate delivery risks. Works with Publishing Strategy & Concepts and Publishing Operations teams to create schedules.
  • Provides content costing and budget breakdown per project.
  • Work closely with Publishing Strategy & Concepts and Publishing Operations teams to ensure efficiency of handovers between departments


Delivery Optimisation


  • Optimise development of all content from manuscript to publication by streamlining the workflow, tools and processes
  • Work with Publishing Strategy & Concepts and Publishing Operations to enable our re-use and versioning strategy through the way our content is built, stored and tagged.
  • Build strong cross-functional relationships to drive the content reuse and versioning strategy
  • Support and influence the Publishing Strategy & Concepts team to identify re-use opportunities at the planning stage and through IA
  • Defines and implements standard best practice approaches to content development in accordance with content frameworks strategy.
  • Oversees the creation of content briefs and guidelines for in-house staff and supplier training and briefing.
  • Support the Director of Publishing Content Development to utilise change management principles, processes and tools to focus on driving operational results and business change.


Qualifications


Educated to degree level or equivalent


Formal ELT/TEFL qualification


Skills/knowledge


  • Knowledge of ELT markets and segments
  • Appreciation for a wide international range of teaching and learning situations
  • Excellent written English
  • An ability to work to tight deadlines and to manage numerous tasks
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Understanding of publishing technologies
  • Knowledge of instructional design
  • Proven project management, communication and organisational skills


Experience


  • Demonstrable experience in English language teaching or instructional design experience
  • Demonstrable ELT publishing experience at project leadership level
  • Proven track record of successful ELT/EFL product development and delivery
  • Experience of working with a range of new media
  • Change management experience
