Research Assistant I/II (several posts) in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health (Ref.: 531435) (to commence as soon as possible on a one-year temporary term or a two-year fixed-term contract, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability)
Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or above, preferably in public health, medical science, biomedicine, or related disciplines. They should have a good command of spoken and written of English and Chinese (including Cantonese), and good interpersonal and communication skills. Applicants should also be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently. Those with more experience may be considered for appointment as Research Assistant I.
The appointees will work on community-based studies of the epidemiology and transmission of respiratory virus infections. They will be responsible for recruitment activities at healthcare facilities and conduct regular participant follow-up activities including in-person/telephone interviews, specimen collection, and perform other duties as assigned. Irregular working hours may be required occasionally. Information about the School can be obtained at https://sph.hku.hk.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointments on fixed terms will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 10% of basic salary.

Applications are invited for appointment as Part-time Research Assistant I/II (several posts) in the HKU-Pasteur Research Pole of the School of Public Health (Ref no.: 532226), to commence as soon as possible on a one-year temporary contract, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Conduct laboratory experiments focusing on third-generation sequencing such as Oxford Nanopore (e.g. library preparation, quality control, and preliminary data analysis)
- Maintain accurate inventories of samples, reagents, and equipment
- Manage data storage, transfer and backup protocols
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support ongoing research projects
- Document experimental workflows and contribute to research publications in alignment with HKU’s authorship guidelines
- Perform other duties as assigned, with opportunities for co-authorship on publications and engagement with global health networks (e.g., Institut Pasteur, WHO)
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in molecular biology, genomics, genetics, or a related discipline
- Preferred candidates will have hands-on experience with sequencing techniques, particularly Oxford Nanopore, as well as proficiency in standard molecular biology protocols
- Good command of written and spoken English; working knowledge of Cantonese and/or Mandarin is advantageous for local collaborations
- Strong organizational skills, self-motivated, attention to details, and adaptable to dynamic research environments

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher in microbiology, bioinformatics, biomedical science, medical science, chemistry or related disciplines. Those with experience in both wet and dry laboratory environments are welcome. Prior experience in deep learning, microbial genomic analysis, metagenomic sequencing, anti-microbial resistance studies or bacterial phage-related studies (including isolation, characterization, and application) is advantageous. Applicants should be responsible, self-motivated and capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team. Strong communication skills in English or Chinese are essential.
The appointees will assist in projects related to genomic sequencing. They will train staff and students in next generation sequencing techniques, provide research support to the research team, communicate with various laboratories based in mainland China, and undertake any other duties as assigned.
