Applications are invited for appointment as Scientific Officer in the Division of Public Health Laboratory Sciences, School of Public Health (Ref.: 531935), to commence as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.
Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree, preferably in biological sciences, biomedical sciences, or a related discipline, with a strong focus on translational research and organoid culture platforms. Candidates must have proven experience in translational research and commercialization, including successful start-up company setup and management. Demonstrated expertise in flow cytometry, virology, confocal imaging, microfluidics, and automated culture platforms such as organ-on-chip is essential. Strong leadership experience with a track record of managing a research team and mentoring junior staff, undergraduates, and postgraduates is required. Additionally, applicants should possess excellent interpersonal skills for communicating complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences, a proactive attitude with strong problem-solving and communication skills, and an excellent command of written and spoken English. Preference will be given to those with a proven track record in drafting patents, applying for academic and start-up funding, and contributing to intellectual property development.
The appointee will supervise and manage research and technical teams, oversee and conduct various research projects in virology, and focus on organoid culture and innovative cell model development. Additional responsibilities include developing and implementing innovative laboratory protocols for advanced organoid culture and maintenance, and leading interdisciplinary research to enhance translational research programs. The appointee should collaborate closely with the research and commercialization team to drive translational research, business development, and operational implementation. The appointee will also establish and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, monitor research progress, provide strategic guidance to ensure successful project outcomes, and provide technical training and coaching to research team members, students, and trainees.
The appointee will work under the supervision of Professor Michael Chan on multidisciplinary research projects relating to infectious diseases using human organoids as a model system. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment on fixed terms will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 15% of basic salary. Requirements
Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree or above in Public Health, Biomedical Sciences or Statistics. They should have a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese; and have the ability to multitask and work independently as well as in a team. Knowledge of statistics or big data analysis, and interest in pursuing postgraduate study (M.Phil. or Ph.D.) would be advantageous. Fresh graduates are welcome to apply. Those with higher qualifications and/or more experience may be considered for appointment as Research Assistant I.
Duties And Responsibilities
The appointee will evaluate public health service, pharmacoepidemiology and epidemiological studies on non-communicable diseases using 3 million population-based cohorts in Hong Kong and 8 million United Kingdom. He/She will prepare literature review; perform data analysis; prepare academic publications and reports for funded projects; and the tasks assigned by the supervisors. On-the-job training in advanced programming (R and Stata) will be provided. The post will provide an excellent opportunity to develop a research career involving advanced statistical programming and big data cohort analysis.
