Instituto de Diagnóstico Ambiental y Estudios del Agua (IDAEA-CSIC) · Sevilla, ES
.
The Institute of Materials Science of Seville (ICMS), a joint centre of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and University of Seville, is offering a four-year contract to pursue a doctoral thesis in the field of persistent luminescence materials for the development of efficient light batteries.
The thesis will be carried out in collaboration with two of the centre's research groups: Multifunctional Optical Materials and Colloidal Materials.
This is a unique opportunity to begin or continue your research career:
Unparalleled scientific and technological environment on the Isla de la Cartuja
Wide range of scientific and technical services
Requirements
A bachelor's degree in Physics or Chemistry and a master's degree in any field related to Nanoscience, Nanotechnology, Physical Chemistry, or Materials Science and Technology.
What are persistent luminescence materials (PersL)?
Also known as light batteries, PersLs can store optical energy and emit light long after excitation has ceased, thanks to crystalline defects that act as traps.
This phenomenon, which introduces time as a variable in the design of luminescent materials, opens up new application possibilities beyond lighting, such as security, optical data storage, and photocatalysis.
Since the discovery of SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+, numerous matrices and dopants have been explored to improve afterglow, but progress has been limited.
The BatLight project, within which this doctoral thesis contract is framed, seeks to overcome these limitations through two strategies: firstly, to understand and model the mechanisms that govern PersL, establishing links between structural and photophysical properties; and secondly, to use photonic architectures to fine-tune the optical properties of the developed materials.
This interdisciplinary approach will optimise efficiency, broaden the range of available materials, and promote new intelligent light sources.
Specific tasks will be tailored to the candidate's prior training and experience and will include the preparation of materials using PersL, their structural and photophysical characterization, and the modelling of the processes that determine afterglow.
This thesis is part of a project funded by the Spanish State Research Agency (Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities) PID***********OB-I00.
