Join to apply for the Teach English in Guatemala role at One, Two...Tree!

One, Two...

Tree! is a non-profit organization working on education in Central America.

It aims to make English accessible to support empowered, entrepreneurial and organised communities.

The project in Guatemala focuses on teaching English in public schools and collaborating with local organizations to offer English classes to learners who are keen to learn.

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals with a passion for teaching to join us in Guatemala.

About One, Two...

Tree!

One, Two...

Tree! was founded in 2013 to offer educational opportunities and a brighter future to children in Central America.

Projects began in Nicaragua and expanded to Guatemala and Mexico.

After a two-year pause due to the pandemic, the Guatemala project was reactivated in 2021 and continues to grow.

Our values emphasize collaboration, adaptability, initiative, and respect.

We teach in public schools, collaborate with local organisations, and offer English classes to those keen to learn.

What will you be doing?

This role entails teaching English to primary-school children in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala.

You should commit to 25 teaching hours per week, with additional time for preparation.

You will receive full support on site, including basic training, teaching materials, weekly progress reviews, and ongoing assistance from our Volunteer Coordinator and the team of volunteers.

We encourage feedback and personal initiative and seek self-starters who are passionate about education and making a difference.

Our project in Guatemala

In Guatemala, we currently teach English to about 300 children and 90 teenagers across three public schools, one community school, one high school, and our learning centre in Santiago Atitlán, plus adult groups.

We have an agreement with the Ministry of Education to provide primary school children with a basic level of English.

Requirements

Before applying, please consider the following criteria:

The ideal stay is 3 to 6 months for continuity; longer stays are preferred.

6 weeks is the absolute minimum; priority is given to longer placements.

Communicative level of English.

Most classes are for beginners; fluency is not strictly required, but you must be comfortable speaking English daily.

Beginners to intermediate Spanish.

Some sessions will be conducted in English; some Spanish is useful for daily life.

We can help arrange Spanish classes if desired.

Some teaching or volunteering experience is a plus.

Passion for education, openness to new cultures, and a drive to learn new skills.

Proactive, creative, flexible, and self-motivated mindset.

Be mindful of Central American holiday periods (mid-December to early February).

A police record issued by local authorities certifying no child-related offenses.

Volunteers must obtain their own travel insurance.

Practical Arrangements and Costs

One, Two...

Tree! operates on a volunteer model and does not charge program fees.

Volunteers cover their own travel and accommodation costs, which are affordable.

Accommodation is with local host families in Santiago Atitlán (typically $150–$300 per month).

Why apply?

Volunteering in Guatemala provides practical teaching skills, a broader perspective on education, improved Spanish, cultural exposure, and opportunities to grow personally and professionally.

Weekends offer travel opportunities to places like Lake Atitlán and Tikal.

We support your development with teamwork, collaboration, and opportunities for professional growth.

We provide recommendation letters, volunteer certificates, and LinkedIn recommendations.

For longer stays (three months or more), we can convert volunteering to an internship with roles in administration, fundraising, or recruitment.

We are also open to university partnerships for college credit.
