Our team and mission

The European Space Agency maintains a world-leading Science Programme with missions in heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics and fundamental physics. Its mission is to 'Empower Europe to lead space science'.

The Science Operations Department within ESA's Directorate of Science hosts the scientists and engineers that oversee space missions from study to end of operations. It develops the science operations systems for the missions and operates the missions in space, as well as archiving and curating their data during operations and beyond. Its main objective is to maximise the scientific output of the missions for the benefit of humankind.

The System Engineering Steering Group oversees system engineering activities within the department, covering both development and operations for Science Operations Centres and cross-functional development tasks. The Product Assurance team supporting the Science Operations Department is responsible for implementing ESA's general Product Assurance policy and ensuring that Directorate and Department standards are upheld in Science Operations missions and projects.

Working closely with System Engineers and Operations Coordinators, these teams interact daily with development and operations engineers to ensure Product Assurance and Engineering requirements are met. They guide missions and projects throughout development, testing, and operations. A key goal of Product Assurance and System Engineering is to enhance process efficiency through process standardisation, selection of suitable tools and methods, and procedure definition.

You are encouraged to visit the ESA website: http://www.esa.int

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship

During this Traineeship, you will collaborate with the Product Assurance and System Engineering teams to use Artificial Intelligence tools to improve the efficiency of engineering processes within the department, and in particular for the Science Operations Centres.

The use of Artificial Intelligence in the following areas of software development and operations will be studied and implemented:

  • Improve the definition of system, subsystem and software requirements
  • Facilitate and automate routine activities in design reviews
  • Test software architectures for robustness and modularity
  • Automate traceability from requirements to design and implementation
  • Code generation and repair
  • Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery optimisation
  • Automatic testing and quality assurance
  • Automation of routine operational activities
  • Natural Language Processing for Standards and Guidelines.

This analysis will be performed using the Science Operations System Engineering Environment and alternative tools will also be analysed.

During the implementation of these tasks, you will need to interact with system, software and operations engineers from various science operations missions to learn about their activities and suggest ideas for improving their processes.
