Join us at the Iberian Centre for Energy Storage Research!

We are looking for a Junior Researcher to expand the horizons of thermochemical energy storage by developing conceptually novel materials.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced and motivated researcher possessing a PhD in the areas of thermochemical energy storage, ad- or absorptive heating or cooling or a close field to join us for the European project 4TunaTES project (https://4tunates.eu). The project focuses on development of new materials for highly tunable low-temperature thermochemical storage of heat, a promising technology for energy storage that is actively emerging in industrial and residential sectors. The major task is synthesis and characterization of thermochemical behavior (TGA/DSC, DVS, XRD, micro-CT, etc.) of materials with tuneable phase diagrams, which can be adapted to numerous heat storage applications. The successful candidate will lead the materials preparation, developing experimental protocols for state-of-the-art thermal and structural characterization. Working in close collaboration with both computational chemists and engineers, you will contribute to the development of a new generation of thermochemical energy storage systems.

We offer

  • An interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment
  •  Access to state-of-the-art facilities for preparation of thermochemical materials and comprehensive analysis of phase transitions and thermal behavior
  • Opportunities to design and lead the platform for experimental investigation of the new class of tuneable thermochemical materials
  • An inclusive and dynamic group with strong international connections

Conditions of employment

  • Duration of the contract is 2 years.
  • A full time job of 37.5 hours per week.
  • The position starts in the fall of 2025.
  • Further details about the conditions of employment can be found on the website (https://ciiae.org/en/empleo-en/)

Job requirements

We seek a candidate who:

  • Holds a PhD degree in physical chemistry, materials science, or related discipline.
  • Is enthusiastic about thermal energy storage, physical chemistry of phase transitions and motivated by scientific questions.
  • Is skilled in inorganic and physical chemistry.
  • Has proven experience in synthesis and characterization of thermochemical (or similar) materials.
  • Is fluent in English and has good scientific presentation and writing skills.
  • Open to working in a team, hand in hand with computational chemists and chemical engineers.

The Iberian Centre for Energy Storage Research (CIIAE)

The Iberian Centre for Energy Storage Research is the newly established research institute fully dedicated to the ideas of sustainable energy future achieved through storage and advanced management of energy. Being the largest joint investment in energy research in Spain and Portugal today, the center is establishing a pioneering infrastructure to make renewable energies a real alternative to fossil fuels.

Despite its short operating time, the center already has more than 100 research employees. CIIAE also addresses high levels of transfer of knowledge towards the productive sector and entrepreneurship, as well as dissemination of science and innovation to society, producing a high socio-economic impact.

The center is equipped with new modern facilities, encompassing laboratory spaces, a comprehensive suite of equipment for materials investigation (including TGA, DSC, DLS, XRD, microscopy, mico-CT, test prototypes), and innovative pilot plants.
