Funded by the European Union (GA: 101168976), this project involves 16 PhD positions across 10 research centers, academic institutions, and 3 companies in Spain, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, and the UK.
Project Overview The SPM4.0 project aims to advance autonomous scanning probe microscopy integrated with artificial intelligence for applications in life sciences and medicine.
The initiative focuses on developing label-free, nanoscale imaging techniques of living cells and biomolecules, fostering Europe's leadership in this field.
Research Group and Activities The BIAT group at IBEC focuses on biomedical challenges of infectious diseases and bacterial transcription mechanisms.
The Nanobioelec group develops multiscale bioelectricity approaches using microscopy, electronics, and AI for medical applications.
Research Project Responsibilities * Grow and overexpress proteins in E. coli using microbiology techniques.
- Purify and characterize transcription factors.
- Perform biological assays such as EMSA and in vitro transcription assays related to bacterial virulence.
- Develop sample preparation protocols for DNA-protein footprinting compatible with scanning force microscopy and create training datasets.
- Validate neural network algorithms for DNA-protein footprinting.
- Apply methodologies to non-footprinted DNA-protein systems.
- Self-critical, quick learner, good communicator, team player, proactive, committed, with integrity and analytical skills.
- Proficient in English.
Eligibility Conditions * No doctoral degree at the start date.
- Enrolled in a PhD program in Spain.
- Mobility rule: no residence or main activity in Spain for more than 12 months in the past 36 months.
- 3-year full-time contract, starting between March and April 2025.
- Approximate gross annual salary: €33,583.34, including family allowances based on MSCA-DN guidelines.

We are seeking a motivated
Introduction To The Vacant Position
We are seeking a motivated early-career research assistant to study the neuronal circuits of C.
elegans using photoswitchable modulators of neuronal receptors.
The candidate must hold a Master's degree in one of the Biology related disciplines (Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Cellular or Chemical Biology, etc).
The successful candidate will get a training in molecular physiology of neuronal receptors, photoswitchable molecules handling and neuronal circuits manipulations.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a model organism whose research led to 4 Nobel prizes.
The successful applicant will join MINECO financed project DOPAMAP led by Dr Galyna Maleeva that will be developed in collaboration between IBEC – The Institute of Bioengineering of Catalunya (Nanoprobes and Nanoswitches Research Group) and ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Sciences (Neurophotonics and Mechanical Systems Biology Research Group).
Both Institutes belong to the Barcelona Institute of Technology and are leading institutions in the field of biomedical research and photonics.

The team focuses on advanced microscopy techniques for high-precision neuronal imaging and activity manipulation, working at the intersection of neuroscience, photonics, and computational science.
The role involves developing software to interface hardware systems, manage large datasets, and support data analysis, contributing to understanding brain activity.
The contract is part of the 2P-BRAINSCOPY ERC-Starting grant project.
Main Tasks and ResponsibilitiesPipeline Development: Design scalable data acquisition, storage, and backup solutions for large image datasets.Device Interface Optimization: Develop and improve Python (or LabVIEW) interfaces for hardware synchronization.Hardware Communication: Customize interfaces for seamless hardware communication.Data Sharing & Backup: Automate backups and enable remote data access, including public repositories.Data Analysis: Refine Python pipelines for accurate neuronal activity data extraction.Support & Collaboration: Serve as the software and hardware expert within the team, collaborating with neuroscientists and photonics experts.Essential RequirementsDegree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience)Proven experience in Python or LabVIEW software developmentExperience handling large datasets and creating efficient workflowsInterest in hardware/software interface development for real-time data acquisitionGenuine interest in neuroscience researchProactive, collaborative, problem-solving skills, effective communicationProficiency in English (written and spoken)Desirable SkillsExperience in neuroscience research or scientific data managementInternational research experienceWhat We OfferOne position availableStart date: 01/02/20253-year full-time contract with competitive salaryWork-life balance measures, training opportunities, international environment, support for visa and relocationApplication ProcessApply online by 23/01/2025 at .
