Senior Accessibility Engineer (Front-End)

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Accessibility Engineer to join a global technology company in the HR and payroll sector, based in Barcelona. You will focus on their design system. You’ll work closely with engineering, design, UX, product and accessibility teams to make sure web and mobile products are accessible to everyone.

Accessibility is the core of this role. You will be the person who knows how to fix it at component level, test it thoroughly, explain it and document it, for engineering and product teams as well as for AI-driven experiences.

What you’ll do

• Fix complex accessibility issues at component level within the design system, finding the root cause and not just the symptom
• Design and build accessible, reusable and scalable patterns: semantic HTML, ARIA, keyboard interaction and focus management in complex components
• Test web and mobile applications against WCAG 2.2 AA and EN 301 549, combining manual testing with automated tools (axe DevTools suite and browser developer tools)
• Run thorough manual testing with assistive technologies: screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack), keyboard-only navigation, screen magnification, high contrast and forced colors
• Validate issues on your own, spot false positives and false negatives, and prioritise them with a risk assessment and a reason for each severity level
• Give developers clear, actionable guidance on fixes and run code reviews focused on accessibility
• Build repeatable test procedures and work with the accessibility team to improve the testing frameworks
• Work with design and UX on the design-to-code workflow, so components are accessible from the start
• Write documentation in English: accessibility specs for each component, expected behaviour for each interaction pattern, reports and guidelines, including structured documentation that AI tools can use
• Explain findings to technical and non-technical audiences, and give accurate estimates of the scope and effort of remediation work
• Build accessibility into the whole development lifecycle (SDLC) and coach engineers and testers on best practices
• Work every day with the US accessibility team and with teams around the world

What we’re looking for

• Hands-on, proven experience in digital accessibility, with real examples of remediation work (must-have)
• Deep knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA, EN 301 549 and the ARIA Authoring Practices
• Strong front-end engineering skills: semantic HTML, CSS and responsive design, JavaScript/TypeScript
• Experience building accessibility into React, Angular, Web Components or other relevant frameworks
• Experience building or maintaining a design system and fixing accessibility defects at component level
• Strong experience with assistive technologies, especially screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver)
• Experience with manual and automated testing of web and mobile applications
• Ability to balance accessibility, usability, performance and maintainability, and to explain those trade-offs with sound judgement
• Good understanding of inclusive design and UX principles
• Ability to lead technical discussions and influence without formal authority, and openness to feedback and iteration
• Excellent communication skills and a desire to keep learning
• Excellent spoken and written English (C1)
• Availability to work some hours that overlap with US East Coast mornings (afternoons in Spain)

Nice to have

• IAAP certification: WAS or CPWA (highly valued)
• Previous accessibility remediation work within a design system
• Experience with enterprise SaaS products
• Experience mentoring engineers and testers on accessibility
• Experience testing with switch control
• Experience in banking or financial services
• Involvement in the accessibility community or standards work (talks, articles, open source, meetups)

Sobre el puesto

Nuestro cliente es una compañía tecnológica global del sector de RR.HH. y nóminas. Busca un/a Senior Accessibility Engineer para su equipo en Barcelona. Trabajarás de cerca con los equipos de diseño y accesibilidad para garantizar que sus productos web y móviles sean accesibles para todas las personas. La accesibilidad es el núcleo de este rol: serás quien sepa testearla, corregirla, explicarla y documentarla.

Qué harás

• Testear aplicaciones web y móviles según WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA, combinando testing manual con herramientas automatizadas como axe
• Realizar testing manual exhaustivo con lectores de pantalla (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack), navegación por teclado y revisión de contraste de color
• Identificar incidencias de accesibilidad, priorizarlas por severidad y dar a los desarrolladores pautas de corrección claras y accionables
• Colaborar con el equipo de diseño para entender y mejorar el design system, asegurando que los componentes sean accesibles desde el inicio
• Redactar documentación, informes y guías de accesibilidad en inglés
• Colaborar a diario con el equipo de accesibilidad en EE.UU.
  
  

• Experiencia práctica y demostrable en accesibilidad digital (imprescindible)
• Sólida base de ingeniería front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, ARIA)
• Conocimiento profundo de WCAG 2.0 o posterior; experiencia con WCAG 2.2 es un plus
• Experiencia sólida con tecnologías de apoyo, especialmente lectores de pantalla
• Experiencia testeando aplicaciones web y móviles
• Buen entendimiento de design systems y principios de UX
• Inglés excelente, oral y escrito (C1)
• Disponibilidad para trabajar algunas horas en solapamiento con las mañanas de la costa este de EE.UU. (tardes en España)
