Context And Mission
Within the Computational Earth Sciences group, the selected candidate will be part of the Models and Workflows team to develop software to run modelling experiments in Pre-Exascale High-Performance Computing facilities.
The Models and Workflows team (MWT) studies and develops essential frameworks and tools to efficiently run modelling experiments on HPC facilities.
It is a growing team of 30 members with intense collaboration with the Performance and Data teams and scientific groups.
The candidate will be part of an international workgroup developing modelling workflows for state-of-the-art Digital Twins.
These workflows will preferably run with the Autosubmit workflow orchestrator, developed by the same team, and scale within top-notch EuroHPC Pre-Exascale systems.
Key Duties
Develop workflow scripts and libraries to execute Earth models on state-of-the-art HPCs.
Contribute to the development and execution of automated tests.
Work within an Agile framework, attend project meetings and contribute to writing project reports.
Contribute to the porting and testing of state-of-the-art Digital Twins to Pre-Exascale systems.
Requirements
Education
Having a Bachelor in Computer Science, Physics, or related discipline.
Having a Master's degree will be valued.
Essential Knowledge And Professional Experience
Good development skills and experience with UNIX/LINUX environments.
Experience in Python programming and/or scripting languages (Bash).
Experience in version control in a collaborative environment.
Additional Knowledge And Professional Experience
Understanding of HPC computer architecture issues, including CPU, accelerators, memory, interconnect, parallel I/O, and computational performance in general.
Experience with coding and documentation best practices and standards.
Troubleshooting and debugging skills.
Previous experience in a scientific area related to the research position will be appreciated.
The BSC Earth Sciences department is an international and interdisciplinary environment, so the candidate must be fluent in English and have good written and verbal skills.
Competences
Earth system models are sophisticated tools and High-Performance Computers are complex systems.
The candidate needs to have excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude to address new challenges and perfect the current solutions so they gain reliability and efficiency.
This is a specialised position so the successful candidate is expected to have a demonstrated learning capacity and the motivation to maintain a learning progression during the contract.
The candidate will work for an international collaborative project, so it is mandatory to be able to fulfil schedules and coordinate with members from other institutions, as well as disseminate the advances in international workshops.

Context And Mission
The Education and Training team at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) coordinates activities and fosters collaborations in the field of High Performance Computing (HPC) with leading universities, research institutions, and supercomputing centers at the local, national, and European levels. Our mission is to support the development of the next generation of HPC professionals and strengthen Europe’s competitiveness in supercomputing through high-quality, accessible training initiatives.
We are seeking a collaborative and innovative professional with experience in training programmes in HPC or related areas to play a key role in European projects focused on HPC education and training.
A central focus of this position will be the scientific training aspects of the AI Factory. As part of the AI Factory initiative, the successful candidate will contribute to the design, coordination, and delivery of AI courses for a wide range of audiences, including professionals, students, and scientists. This role will support the development of high-quality, ethical, and accessible training content, while ensuring consistency across all learning pathways. The position offers the opportunity to collaborate with academic and industry partners, foster innovation, and strengthen AI skills across Europe.
This project is funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, in accordance with Council Regulation (EU) 2020/2094 of 14 December 2020, and regulated by Regulation (EU) 2021/241 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 12 February 2021, in the context of the “BSC AI Factory” project.

Key Duties
- Coordinate foundational and specialised training for scientific personnel at BSC, in collaboration with BSC researchers from all research departments
- Oversee curriculum development, instructional design, and harmonisation of training modules across participant groups
- Coordinate and support training events, seminars, and meetings for various audiences at different levels
- Collaborate with universities to deliver student-focused initiatives

Responsibilities
Develop and maintain open-source repositories containing data processing pipelines, machine learning training scripts, and model evaluation tools related to climate prediction and extreme event attribution.
Contribute to the design and implementation of reproducible data workflows, ensuring transparency and usability for the broader climate science community.
Collaborate with climate scientists and machine learning experts to integrate models and datasets into the platform, and adapt tools to different use cases and research needs.
Document pretrained models, benchmark datasets, and evaluation protocols, making them accessible and easy to use by external researchers.
Support the deployment and maintenance of the Open Science Platform, including version control, continuous integration, and basic platform testing.

The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department.

Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration.

Development of the recruitment process
The selection will be carried out through a competitive examination system (Concurso-Oposición).
The Recruitment Process Consists Of Two Phases
Curriculum Analysis: Evaluation of previous experience and/or scientific history, degree, training, and other professional information relevant to the position.
- 40 points
In this phase, technical competencies, knowledge, skills, and professional experience related to the position, as well as the required personal competencies, will be evaluated.
- 60 points.
The recruitment panel will be composed of at least three people, ensuring at least 25% representation of women.
In accordance with OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for each vacancy at the beginning of the process.
After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will begin the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview.
At a minimum, a personality questionnaire as well as a technical exercise will be conducted during the process.
The panel will make a final decision, and all individuals who participated in the interview phase will receive feedback with details on the acceptance or rejection of their profile.
