The Ecosphere Research Group at the University of Antwerp, in collaboration with KU Leuven, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position within the FWO project “Climate mitigation and adaptation potential of naturally vs. artificially regenerated oak-dominated forests in Flanders.” The project aims to investigate carbon stocks, drought resilience, and microbial community functioning in different forest regeneration systems, as well as the role of local adaptation using genomic tools.

Requirements

– Master’s degree (MSc) in Biology, Bioscience Engineering, Ecology, Forestry, Soil Science, or a related discipline

– Strong academic record (distinction or higher)

– Proficiency in English (spoken and written)

– Willingness to participate in fieldwork and obtain a driver’s license if not already held

– Availability to start in September–October 2025 (students graduating in June 2025 are welcome to apply)

The successful candidate will engage in both field and laboratory research, collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, and spend time at both the University of Antwerp and KU Leuven.
