Overview

The General Manager for Spain leads the QBE business in the country, implementing QBE global and Insurance Division strategy in the local market. The GM is accountable for the country P&L, which is embedded within the European P&L, leads the local teams across all functions, and is the ultimate representative of the QBE brand in the local market. The role includes power of attorney and accountability for complying with local legal and regulatory requirements. The GM reports into the Director of Insurance Europe and is part of the European Management Committee (EMC).

Primary Responsibilities:

Implement QBE Strategy in the country:


  • Contribute to the translation of the QBE vision into the European and local strategy and plan, actively seeking synergies with London and other countries in European Markets in order to ensure delivery of the business plan in line with market and shareholder expectations.
  • Lead implementation of business change initiatives within the local entity, ensuring alignment with wider European strategy.
  • Anticipate and keep up to date with market dynamics and industry developments to ensure practices and outputs are of a high standard, identify new opportunities and drive forward continuous improvement.
  • Provide tactical direction and support to operational management, ensuring that people, resources and processes are aligned with business needs and fit for purpose.
  • Oversee the monitoring and review of processes in order to identify improvements which will enhance efficiency and reflect latest developments and best practice.
  • Act as a key Europe stakeholder to and active participant in all EMC meetings and discussions and represent the Europe region in all relevant internal European Operations and Insurance Division QBE forums, working closely with the other European management colleagues and EO functions.



Country P&L Owner:


  • Formulate the country annual business plan, ensuring alignment with the European plan, monitoring progress and reporting regularly through submissions and at meetings in order to ensure effective delivery of objectives.
  • Develop the portfolio in line with the financial and strategic European plan, ensuring retention and acquisition of desired business in line with wider strategy.
  • Identify, develop and recommend new profitable initiatives for inclusion in the plan and the likely resources necessary to ensure successful delivery.
  • Translate strategy into operational deliverables and provide tactical leadership and support to managers, facilitating effective planning, control and support mechanisms to achieve positive results for the business.
  • Drive business performance through others, facilitating effective planning, control and support mechanisms to ensure delivery of the business plan and objectives.
  • Ensure underwriting strategy is communicated, understood and implemented in order to deliver business growth.
  • Deliver efficient, accurate and timely MI which supports informed decision making and enables effective action to be identified and implemented.
  • Prepare an expense budget and actively manage it, ensuring effective finance controls are in place in order to identify issues/variances and any potential cost efficiencies and improvements.
  • Manage, review and analyse performance in order to ensure business plan objectives for the local entity are on target and any issues identified in good time.
  • Support the Executive Director, Europe in managing underwriting and non underwriting business activities and resources, to ensure successful delivery and achievement of European business goals.



Market Leader and ultimate representative of QBE in the country


  • Build and develop strong relationships with key external stakeholders including customers, brokers, industry bodies and business partners in order to facilitate increased understanding, enhance co-operation and promote QBE’s reputation within the marketplace.
  • Network internally and externally in order to learn from others; sharing knowledge and information to improve performance.
  • Represent QBE’s interests with the press and internal and external groups and participate in local industry forums and other corporate activities, actively promoting the profile of QBE in the marketplace.



People Leader


  • Establish clear accountabilities and authority levels for direct reports and build a strong culture of accountability and performance in order to ensure delivery of goals.

Legal Responsibilities


  • Represent the local entity in projects/initiatives to ensure local requirements are understood and successfully implemented.
  • Manage compliance with QBE EO’s policy and procedures framework to ensure activities and resources are in line with best practice and meet all legal, regulatory and other required standards.
  • Establish and maintain procedures for properly and promptly entering full details on EO systems of:
    • underwriting, reinsurance and claims,
    • cash flow and credit control,
    • aggregate exposures,
    • expenses,
    • ensuring data and information provides an accurate picture of activity and supports robust analysis.
  • Ensure that systems are implemented to produce reports which enable accurate monitoring of performance and provide informed analysis for board and other committees/groups.

  • University Degree or equivalent experience
