FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens , LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students.

Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. The Community Health and Wellness Department at LaGuardia Community College offers four undergraduate degree programs: Human Services: Mental Health, Nutrition and Culinary Management, Public and Community Health, and Therapeutic Recreation. The department is home to a dedicated team of 12 full-time and 17 adjunct faculty, along with one full-time and three adjunct College Laboratory Technicians, as well as technical and expert staff—all committed to equipping students with the knowledge and practical skills necessary for success in their professional careers. In addition to rigorous coursework, the department offers a variety of training and certifications to enhance students’ qualifications. Courses are delivered in-person, online, and asynchronously, on occasion. The Public and Community Health major is designed for transfer to 4-year programs in Public Health, Community Health Education, and other health-related nonclinical programs. All program courses feature regular skills-building writing assignments or activities designed to achieve this goal. Additionally, the hired lecturer will be expected to instruct courses for the department, such as The First Year Seminar and Community Health, as well as program-level courses (e.g., Public Health, Epidemiology). The Lecturer may also be called upon to serve in leadership roles, such as Program Director, as departmental needs arise.

The successful candidate is expected to perform the following typical work duties:

  • Teach courses in all subject areas within the Public and Community Health Program.
  • Instruct courses for the department, such as the First-Year Seminar and other Interdisciplinary courses.
  • Develop and revise curriculum to align with current public health frameworks, workforce competencies, and student needs, including integration of equity, social justice, and community engagement.
  • Participate in program assessment, including developing and evaluating learning outcomes, collecting and analyzing student performance data, and preparing program review reports.
  • Collaborate with faculty across programs and departments to support interdisciplinary learning and co-curricular initiatives.
  • Engage in departmental and college service, including committee participation, program meetings, and events that support student retention and success and advance the strategic goals of the college.
  • Participate in LaGuardia’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) seminars and initiatives to enhance pedagogical practices, support student success, and remain current with evidence-based instructional strategies
  • Mentor and advise students on academic progress, career planning, transfer opportunities, and placements for students seeking degree-related work experiences.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community health organizations and agencies to support guest lectures and service-learning opportunities.
  • Participate in the coordination and implementation of campus-wide Public and Community Health Program activities.
  • Coordinate, conduct activities, and recruit at all high school, college, and state-wide recruitment and enrollment events.
  • Help develop and sustain articulation agreements with high schools and 4-year schools within the Public and Community Health Program.
  • Teach courses in in-person, online, or hybrid class formats.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree (preferred) in Public Health, Community Health, Health Education, Community Health Education, Health Policy, Global Health, and/or Health Promotion from an accredited institution.

Other Qualifications

  • Demonstrated college-level teaching experience in introductory or foundational public health courses.
  • Experience with curriculum development, assessment, and/or program coordination.
  • Familiarity with community-based health interventions, health disparities, and public health systems.
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive pedagogy, and experience integrating social determinants of health and health equity into teaching.
  • Experience using instructional technology, including Brightspace and Zoom, as well as Microsoft Office Suite and Google Docs.
  • Highly organized and focused with superior follow-through and attention to detail.
  • Strong time management skills and experience meeting multiple project objectives.
  • Keen attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to equity, student success, and working with diverse student populations, and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

All faculty will be required to submit to a drug screen and criminal background check.

Compensation

$55,243 - $74,245

Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development.

CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will increase by approximately 9.54% with an additional increase of 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
