The Computational Pharmacy Group at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Basel, invites applications for a PhD position in computer-aided drug design. This interdisciplinary project aims at the rational design of carbohydrate mimetics as antagonists of collectin-11, a key lectin in the innate immune system, with potential applications in novel anti-inflammatory therapies.

Requirements

– Master’s degree (or equivalent) in pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related field

– Excellent understanding of structural biology and molecular interactions, particularly protein–ligand recognition

– Practical experience with molecular modeling tools and techniques (e.g., docking, molecular dynamics simulations, free energy calculations, QM/MM methods)

– Programming or scripting skills (e.g., Python, Bash) are highly desirable

– Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills

– Previous experience with modeling carbohydrates and their binding proteins is an advantage

– Motivation for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation

The successful candidate will engage in in silico design and molecular modeling of carbohydrate mimics, utilizing state-of-the-art computational techniques and collaborating with experimental partners for compound synthesis and testing.

The position is fully funded for four years (Swiss National Science Foundation) and offers access to high-performance computing resources, advanced training opportunities, and an inclusive, stimulating research environment in Basel, Switzerland.
