The Department of Culture and Language at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), in collaboration with the SDU Denmark Climate Cluster, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in climate history and climate science. This position is part of the externally funded research project “Here Comes the Invincible Sun: Toward a Climate History of the Roman Conquest,” supported by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

The project examines the influence of climate change in Italy from the 4th to the 1st century BCE on Rome’s conquest of the Mediterranean world, with the goal of elucidating the connections between climate, agriculture, and shifts in geopolitical power.

Key Responsibilities

– Collect and synthesize published scientific and historical climate data for Italy and the eastern Mediterranean (400–100 BCE)

– Analyze changes in temperature and precipitation during this period

– Investigate the relationship between Rome’s expansion and natural climate changes

Requirements

– PhD in History, Archaeology, Environmental Science, Climatology, Geography, or related fields (obtained within the last 8 years)

– Preferably with a focus on climatology, climate change, or weather history

– Knowledge of Latin is an advantage
