Ready to be part of the experience?
Now, let´s discuss this role and what you will do to help achieve Fever´s mission.
The Role
We´re looking for a Lead ML Engineer with strong technical expertise and proven leadership skills. Beyond building robust, scalable, and maintainable systems, you´ll be responsible for growing and mentoring a high-performing ML team, leading cross-functional projects, and managing stakeholders.
You´ll set the technical direction, ensure engineering excellence, and create an environment where engineers can thrive. From recommendations and search to marketing optimization and process automation, your work will shape the future of ML at Fever.
What you´ll do
- Drive the design, implementation, and delivery of scalable ML systems, from data ingestion and model development to deployment and production performance.
- Oversee and ensure reliability of distributed, event-driven systems handling 1000+ requests per second.
- Define best practices in ML engineering, ensuring clean architecture, testability, and long-term maintainability.
- Hire, mentor, and grow a team of ML engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
- Collaborate closely with Data Engineering and Data Science teams to ensure strong data foundations, seamless model integration, and shared impact.
- Provide technical and strategic leadership in ML projects, aligning priorities with business goals.
- Act as a bridge between engineering, product, and business stakeholders: translating requirements, managing expectations, and delivering impact.
- Collaborate with DICE, Onebox, and other Fever group teams to strengthen the Fever ecosystem.
What we´re looking for
- Strong software engineering and ML expertise, with hands-on experience in Python, productionizing models, and building scalable systems (event-driven architectures, microservices, APIs, and databases).
- Solid experience with cloud and container orchestration (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes), modern ML/engineering tooling (e.g., Airflow, MLFlow) , CI/CD and observability.
- Proven ability to set engineering best practices, ensuring reliability, performance, and long-term maintainability of ML solutions.
- Experience leading engineering projects, setting direction, and coordinating stakeholders.
- Track record of hiring, mentoring, and growing engineering teams.
Bonus points for
- Experience with ML platforms (MLFlow, MetaFlow, DeepNote) and search/streaming technologies (ElasticSearch, Kafka, Flink, Spark Streaming).
- Building and shipping recommender systems, ranking services, or marketplace ML solutions at scale.
- Hands-on experience with marketing APIs (Meta, Google) or similar integrations.
- Side projects or open-source contributions in data-driven applications.
The environment
- Product-driven, cloud-native (AWS), fast-moving team.
- We care about code quality, performance, testability, and long-term maintainability.
- We hire builders: people who like to own systems end to end and enjoy working across the stack.
- Leadership is hands-on and collaborative, setting the pace through initiative, example, and accountability.
Benefits & Perks
- Responsibility from day one and professional and personal growth
- Opportunity to have a real impact in a high-growth global category leader
- A compensation package consisting of base salary and the potential to earn a significant bonus for top performance
- Stock options plan
- 40% discount on all Fever events and experiences
- Home office friendly, location in Madrid or Barcelona required
- Health insurance and other benefits such as Flexible remuneration with a 100% tax exemption through Cobee
- English / Spanish Lessons

Lead Software Engineer
Swiss Re · Madrid, ES
API Java MongoDB Docker Kubernetes Elasticsearch Kotlin TypeScript SaaS AWS Spring PostgreSQL React Kafka
Overview
At iptiQ by Swiss Re, we are building the next generation of digital life and health insurance. Our engineering teams are driving innovation across large-scale, cloud-native platforms that power millions of customer interactions. We blend modern software engineering with deep industry expertise to create solutions that are accessible, reliable, and user-centric. Our technology extends well beyond traditional insurance and encompasses data-intensive systems, modern architectures, digital health solutions, advanced analytics, and secure, high-performance services.
About the role
As a Lead Software Engineer, you will take ownership of significant cross-domain initiatives, influence architectural direction, and guide engineering teams through complex technical challenges. You will partner closely with Senior Engineering Managers (SEMs), architects, and cross-functional leads to plan and deliver large, strategic programs.
You will also serve as a technical role model-driving high-quality engineering practices, ensuring robust delivery forecasting, and elevating the technical maturity of your domain.
Our Technology Stack
Our cloud-native, multi-tenant SaaS platform runs on AWS. We use Kotlin, Java, SpringBoot, Docker, Kubernetes, Apache Kafka, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL on the backend, and ReactJS and TypeScript on the frontend. Our continuous delivery pipeline leverages GitLab. We are using Prometheus, ElasticSearch, Kibana and Grafana as our logging and monitoring stack.
Our mission
iptiQ is not just an insurance company; we are at the forefront of integrating technology into the life and health insurance space. We employ people with diverse technical backgrounds who are eager to solve some of the industry´s most complex problems and make a lasting impact on our customers globally. At iptiQ, you´ll not only be a part of transforming the insurance industry but also work on large-scale applications and new platforms that redefine how insurance products are developed and delivered. From revolutionizing underwriting processes to creating user-centric digital health tools, our engineers are at the heart of iptiQ´s mission to transform the world of insurance.
Ideal Candidate:
We are looking for someone who:
- Has strong technical depth in several components of our stack, with proven ability to lead complex engineering efforts.
- Operates with ownership and accountability over domain-quality and cross-domain delivery.
- Has an entrepreneurial mindset, continuously seeks improvement, and motivates teams through influence rather than authority.
- Demonstrates exceptional collaboration skills across engineering, product, architecture, and operations.
- Acts as a mentor and technical leader for engineers across multiple teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive and deliver multi-quarter, cross-domain initiatives and support SEMs with planning, estimation accuracy, and technical alignment.
- Lead technical grooming for complex, cross-domain features and guide story preparation for small to medium domain work.
- Shape and communicate technical proposals (RFCs) and guide them through CTO-level decision-making.
- Act as a domain expert, providing guidance on architectural decisions and integration impacts.
- Independently design and develop high-quality features while continuously improving domain quality (logging, error handling, documentation, API clarity).
- Maintain strong engineering discipline by following DoR/DoD, avoiding unaligned refactoring, and ensuring clear, maintainable documentation.
- Achieve high delivery predictability (90-100% estimation accuracy) and effectively manage unplanned work within planned capacity.
- Mentor and support engineers across teams, elevating technical capabilities and cross-domain collaboration.
What We Offer:
- A supportive and collaborative team environment
- Opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies
- Professional growth and learning opportunities
- Flexible working time and location
For Spain, the base salary range for this position is between EUR 60,000 and EUR 100,000 (for a full-time role). The specific salary offered considers:
- the requirements, scope, complexity and responsibilities of the role,
- the applicant´s own profile including education/qualifications, expertise, specialisation, skills and experience.
In addition to your base salary, Swiss Re offers an attractive performance-based variable compensation component, designed to recognise your achievements. Further you will enjoy a variety of global and location specific benefits.
Eligibility may vary depending on the terms of Swiss Re policies and your employment contract.
