Offer Description
Objectives
Improve the biomanufacturing efficiency through a combination of advanced computational and experimental techniques (in model organisms such as P. pastoris and C. necator), along with AI-driven tools for bio-retrosynthesis-based metabolic pathway design, enzyme design and optimization, and DNA part selection.
Knowledge-graph-based combinatorial experiment designs are used to span multiple scales, while Multiobjective optimization strategies ensure improvements in efficiency across various biomanufacturing scales.
Expected Results
Development of innovative bio-based production methods tailored to meet specific target property requirements. These methods will leverage new-to-nature metabolic pathways, ensuring the efficient production of food ingredients and proteins.
A multi-scale strategy will be implemented to design and optimise these metabolic pathways, integrating insights from various biological scales.

FrameBio (Multiscale Frameworks for BioSolutions) is a project funded by the European Union with a goal is to revolutionise biotechnology by developing comprehensive computational modules that simulate the microbial behaviour of bioproducts and quantify/estimate their resource dependencies across various scales. This PhD position is part of a unique multidisciplinary Doctoral Network (15 partners and 10 countries) that will collaborate and train 13 PhDs in genomics, metabolomics, fermentation, process optimisation, data science, and sustainability assessments. This project has received funding from the Horizon Europe, Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) grant (Grant agreement ID: *********, ).

The
Dynamics Biodesign Lab (DBDL)
, led by Dr.
Pablo Carbonell
, creates innovative solutions for automated biofoundries, fostering sustainable industrial biotechnology across the bio-economy sectors. The lab combines synthetic biology, machine learning and biosensor and pathway dynamic regulation design to produce next-generation bio-based chemicals.
The
Computational Synthetic Biology group (CSBG)
, led by Dr.
Irene Otero-Muras
, works on the design, analysis and control of biomolecular networks: nonlinear, complex systems – sometimes subject to significant molecular noise – with relevance in cell regulation, signalling and metabolic processes. The research aims to advance fundamental understanding and address innovative applications for systems and synthetic biology.
The
Biotechnology of Industrial Yeasts Laboratory
of I2SysBio, led by Dr.
Agustín Aranda
, deals with the use of different species of yeast of biotechnological interest, mainly Saccharomyces cerevisiae during winemaking. We are focused on regulatory systems as stress response (mainly oxidative) and nutrient signalling pathways, and we use genetic manipulation to characterise such mechanisms in conditions that mimic industrial environments.
The
Spanish National Research Council (CSIC)
is the largest public research organisation in Spain and one of the most important in the European Research Area (ERA). It is the main player in the Spanish Science, Technology, and Innovation System and is currently made up of over 13,200 people. These individuals are distributed between the CSIC Corporate Organisation, 121 research institutes, and three national centres located throughout Spain, as well as an institute in Rome. The CSIC conducts research in three core areas: Society, Life, and Material, which cover most academic disciplines. In March ****, the CSIC was among the institutions awarded the 'HR Excellence in Research Award'. The DC will be enrolled in the "Institute for Integrative Systems Biology . The DC will be enrolled in the Science and Technology Programme, Biosciences area, offered by the Menendez Pelayo International University.

NoOffer DescriptionThe Institute for Economic Analysis (IAE) is a research center within the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the largest public research institution in Spain.
Founded in **** and situated in the Barcelona metropolitan area, the IAE is renowned for advancing frontier research in economics.
Its team of researchers is dedicated to scientific excellence, employing both theoretical and empirical approaches across a wide spectrum of economic areas.
Consistently recognized in international rankings, the IAE stands out as one of Europe's premier institutions for economic research. The IAE is also a founding member of the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE), a world-class institution that fosters collaboration among four academic and research units in Barcelona.
The BSE has consistently been awarded Severo Ochoa grants since the program was launched by Spain's State Research Agency.
This prestigious recognition is awarded to top research institutions in Spain that demonstrate scientific impact and leadership at the international level.
The IAE is engaged in graduate education by directing and contributing to BSE Master's programs.
We are equally dedicated to the IDEA doctoral program at UAB, where we mentor the next generation of scholars, equipping them with the guidance, resources, and support necessary to excel in their academic pursuits. As a public institution, CSIC periodically opens \"Permanent Job Calls,\" which are the way to achieve a permanent public position at CSIC as a civil servant.
You may consult these at CSIC's Virtual Platform .
There are 3 levels of permanent positions at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC): Tenured Scientist (Associate Professor level 1), Research Scientist (Associate Professor level 2) and Research Professor.CSIC typically opens an annual call for permanent positions, but this does not guarantee that the IAE will have an open position / open positions each year.
In general, the IAE Board must request positions from CSIC, submitting a list of highly qualified candidates who have expressed a strong interest in joining the institute.
Therefore, if you are interested, please contact ****** and check our website here or here .
As a general rule, candidates should have a European Union citizenship, although there are a few exceptions to this.
To apply for a tenured civil servant position, candidates who have completed their Ph.D. thesis abroad must have their doctoral degree homologated or at least received the equivalence in Spain.
Equivalence is a simplified procedure that certifies, for academic purposes, that the training completed to obtain a foreign master's or doctoral degree is comparable to that required in Spain, both in terms of level and in relation to a specific academic area and field.
For reference, the process of obtaining the equivalence of a foreign Ph.D. degree can take up several months.
Hence, the process should be started before there is a call announcing new positions. If you need the recognition of equivalence of your doctoral degree, the body responsible for issuing it will be any Spanish public or private university, provided that the university offers a doctoral program comparable to the one for which recognition is sought.
Some of the documents to be submitted will require an official translation into Spanish and might require legalization .
Within the European Union, the translation of public documents of a Member State is not required when they are accompanied by a standard multilingual form.
The legalization must be carried out by the Spanish consular office in the country where the document was issued, except in the case of countries that are signatories of the Hague Convention , where legalization is replaced by the apostille, issued by the competent authorities of the country of origin.
Neither legalization nor apostille is required for academic documents issued by EU Member States, signatories to the EEA Agreement or Switzerland.
