Project Overview
NeurEYE is an interdisciplinary venture aimed at developing and clinically validating an automated system for assessing functional limitations in people with neurological conditions (Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, stroke, cerebral palsy, etc.).
The system relies on multi-modal data collected through inertial, audio-video, depth, and wearable sensors while users perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).
The ultimate goal is to provide comprehensive clinical reports that support healthcare professionals in diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
PhD Focus
The PhD will design, implement and validate algorithmic solutions to automatically evaluate functional limitations, ensuring objective clinical validity and eliminating evaluator bias.
The research will explore state-of-the-art deep learning architectures, generative models and multimodal integration under scarce data constraints, with an emphasis on methods that can be transferred to real clinical settings.
Research Tasks
Study, implement and improve robust deep-learning architectures for behavior analysis using RGB-D images and biometric sensors (accelerometer bracelets).
Develop methods to extract quality parameters from monitored users during ADLs and relate them to neurological condition and disease evolution.
Create and maintain image and multimodal databases for the target environments.
Evaluate algorithmic proposals on the available databases.
Integrate and assess the developed systems within clinical validation tools.
Generate demonstrators to facilitate technology transfer.
Contract Conditions
Full-time research position (37.5 h per week).
4-year contract: €******,00 /year for the first three years, €******,51 /year for the fourth year.
Research costs, including materials, publications and management, will be covered.
The position is based in a partly presential scheme at the University of Alcalá (Polytechnic School, Electronics Department); accommodation assistance may be arranged.
The PhD will be conducted in English.
Organisation
University of Alcalá – GEINTRA One – NeurEYE research group.
Research fields: AI programming, signal processing, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision.
Eligibility Criteria
Master degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Signal Processing, Applied Mathematics or a related field (at least 60 ECTS).
Not yet holding a PhD title.
Strong mathematical, signal-systems analysis and programming skills.
Excellent written, oral and presentation skills in English.
Motivation to conduct independent research in AI technologies for audio/video/depth/biological signal processing.
Previous experience in computer vision, machine or deep learning, especially semi-supervised or unsupervised learning, is advantageous.
Team spirit, social/communication skills and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
Skills / Qualifications
Degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or similar.
Experience in computer vision, signal processing, Python programming, machine learning and deep learning.
