Descripción de la oferta
Head of Innovation - Space Communications Group
Role Overview
At the i2CAT Space Communications Unit, we don’t just research the future; we build it. We are looking for a Head of Innovation with a strategic mindset to lead the intersection between advanced research and market reality.
Your challenge will be to transform the center's technical capabilities into scalable solutions, leading technology transfer and consolidating our position as a benchmark in the NewSpace ecosystem at both national and European levels. If you want your work to directly impact the next giant leap for the aerospace industry, this is your place.
Your Role
As an innovation leader, your key functions will be:
- Strategic Innovation Leadership: Coordinate the activities of the Space Communications group to align them with i2CAT’s strategic roadmap.
- Drive Technology Transfer: Define pathways to bring research outcomes to the industry (licensing, co-development, and joint innovation initiatives).
- Market & Viability Analysis: Assess the technical maturity (TRL) and commercial relevance of the technologies developed by our research teams.
- Ecosystem Engagement: Act as a senior interface with private companies, integrators, industry associations, and space agencies (ESA, national agencies).
- Proposal & Funding Coordination: Lead the innovation components of public and private funding proposals in collaboration with the commercial and research teams.
- Cross-Team Alignment: Ensure seamless cohesion between research teams, business development functions, and external stakeholders.
- We practice a 4-1 hybrid model (4 days remotely, 1 day at the office) to balance face-to-face collaboration with deep-focus remote work. We embrace a hybrid model, but we truly encourage our team to soak up the in-office experience. There’s a unique energy and collaboration in our new space that you simply can't replicate through a screen.
- Enjoy core hours flexibility: as long as you’re online for our team syncs between 10:00 and 15:00, you can design the rest of your day to fit your rhythm.
- Early-Finish Fridays: We believe in a long weekend. Every Friday throughout the year is an intensive 6.5-hour workday, so you can kick off your personal time by mid-afternoon.
- Intensive summer schedule: To help you enjoy the sun and balance family life during school holidays, we switch to a 7-hour workday from June 22nd to September 4th.
- You get 27 paid vacation days per year, well above the legal minimum, giving you over five full weeks to recharge whenever you need them. You are asked to enjoy at least 12 vacation days during summer.
- We will work so that you have a career plan to promote your growth and development.
The i2CAT Foundation is a non-profit research and innovation center promoting mission-driven R&D activities on advanced Internet architectures, applications, and services. More than 15 years of international research define our expertise in the fields of 5G, IoT, VR, and Immersive Technologies, Cybersecurity, Blockchain, AI, and Digital Social Innovation. We partner with companies, public administration, academia, and end-users to leverage this knowledge in order to meet real social and business challenges.
The greatest value of i2CAT is the talent of the people who make up our human team. We enjoy a team of people from more than 13 different nationalities and work every day to create and foster a work environment where we all feel comfortable creating, innovating and growing.
If you decide to come to the office, we are located at Pier 01 (Tech Barcelona), right in the heart of the Port of Barcelona. Our offices are designed with an open-office concept where light and transparency take center stage. We offer a variety of workspaces so you aren't tied to the same desk all day, fostering both spontaneous collaboration and focused work.

- Contribute to technical documentation with the aim to make it the best of its kind

- Professional manner interacting with colleagues, partners, and community
- Experience writing thoroughly designed, modern, maintainable Python
- Conscientiousness and detail orientation, with a focus on performance
- Professional written and spoken English
- Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
- Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability
- Passion, thoughtfulness, and self-motivation
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments
- Ability to travel twice a year, for company events up to two weeks each
- Experience with container technologies such as LXD, Docker and Kubernetes
- Understanding of build systems and toolchains, including for cross-compilation
- Additional languages, particularly Golang or Rust, C or C++
- Deep quality and test engineering
- Web or Flutter front-end experience
- REST and gRPC API experience
- SQL and NoSQL data store expertise
- Experience with public clouds or OpenStack
- Experience with Debian/Ubuntu packaging
- Experience with systems programming or scalable web services
- Performance engineering and security experience

Job Description
Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is very widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation and IoT. Our customers include the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers, and industry leaders in many sectors. The company is a pioneer of global distributed collaboration, with 1000+ colleagues in 70+ countries and very few office based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person, in interesting locations around the world, to align on strategy and execution.
The company is founder led, profitable and growing.
We are hiring an Embedded Linux Field Engineer for Devices/IoT to expand our reach in mission-critical industries such as Automotive, Medical Devices, Industrial Systems, Robotics, and Telco, as well as Consumer Electronics. We are looking for candidates who are accomplished Linux plumbers. If you are someone passionate about Linux, who knows the plumbing of the OS inside and out, who is proficient with distribution packaging, software design, system debugging, and bringing customer's ideas to life, then please keep on reading - this may be a uniquely exciting opportunity for you.
The server edition of Ubuntu is already very widely used in connected devices and industrial PC's. Our edition of Ubuntu tailored for IoT, called Ubuntu Core, represents the state of the art in security and resilience for high end appliances and equipment. Our customers include global brands in consumer and industrial electronics as well as automotive and robotics. We continue to expand our range of offerings to bring our security, management and developer experience to the smallest Linux environments and devices. We recently added a real-time Linux capability and are working towards a range of certifications for these offerings. Together, this portfolio is Linux reinvented for optimal reliability, security, developer productivity and footprint.
This career opportunity requires a unique blend of skills. Successful candidates will know Linux well and be proficient coders and scripters. They will have experience of low-level Linux boot, BIOS, EFI, Secure Boot, firmware, OS Distribution packaging and generally speaking embedded software development methodologies. They also enjoy the pace of change and diversity of client engagements with driven and ambitious technology entrepreneurs. Competitive, business-focused technologists at heart, they are also dedicated team players that take pride in team and company wins.
We often say that our field engineers have 'the hardest job at Canonical' because customers can ask about any aspect of our solutions and products and expect a thoughtful, well-informed answer. We always want to do the best thing for our partners and customers, regardless of our company interests, and field engineers are the people we trust to ensure that is true.
What your day will look like
- Engage customers during presales to gather requirements and explain our technology
- Elaborate solutions to be proposed to prospective clients
- Participate to the delivery of select projects related to Embedded Linux
- Convey market requirements to key stakeholders in our organization, and sometimes participate to the development or refining of generic solutions to unlock market potential
- Be both a customer advocate and a trusted advisor to Canonical
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related technical field
- Extensive Linux experience - Debian or Ubuntu preferred
- Distribution / Packaging experience (deb, rpm, ...)

- Professional written and spoken English in addition to the local language
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Result-oriented, ability to multi-task
- A personal drive to meet commitments
- An humble learner and quick study
- Albeit many projects can be done remotely, the successful candidate will be willing to travel up to 30% of the time for customer meetings, company events, and conferences
- For positions in Japan and Korea, the successful candidates will also be able to speak and write the local language at a professional level.
- Experience with customer engagements a plus, but not a requirement
We consider geographical location, experience, and performance in shaping compensation worldwide. We revisit compensation annually (and more often for graduates and associates) to ensure we recognise outstanding performance. In addition to base pay, we offer a performance-driven annual bonus or commission. We provide all team members with additional benefits, which reflect our values and ideals. We balance our programs to meet local needs and ensure fairness globally.

Our platform, Ubuntu, is very widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Our customers include the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers, and industry leaders in many sectors. The company is a pioneer of global distributed collaboration, with 1200+ colleagues in 75+ countries and very few office-based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person, in interesting locations around the world, to align on strategy and execution.
The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing.
This is a general track role, hiring for every team at Canonical who works in Python, across all levels of seniority. Apply here if you believe you are already an outstanding Python engineer.
Canonical works across the entire open source spectrum. Canonical Ubuntu is well-known as a developer favourite and enterprise-friendly Linux. Our web services and system utilities are often written in Python, which we choose where collaboration with other teams, ecosystems and communities is more important than raw performance.
We hire Python Developers with a passion for open-source software, innovation, and cutting-edge technologies. We also look for colleagues who understand that a great product is more than code – it is ready for the unexpected, it is well documented, it is comprehensively tested, it is tastefully presented in its CLI or GUI. At Canonical, you will have the opportunity to make significant contributions through high-quality, idiomatic Python code.
Your team will own a product that may comprise several codebases. These may be intended to run on servers, or on Kubernetes, or on the desktop, or as web services for Ubuntu clients. They may be utilities or frameworks or tools, or part of our production process.
Additionally, this role will give you the opportunity to engage with the broader open-source community. We're looking for individuals who can help build a thriving community, contribute to a broad range of technologies, and ensure seamless software operations at scale.
Location: we have remote Python engineering roles in every time zone.
