How you’ll make an impact

As a leader of the Software Engineering team, you shape technical direction across multiple product verticals, with a strong focus on using AI and modern engineering approaches to accelerate product delivery, improve engineering productivity and raise the quality bar across our existing products. You are energised by new technology and actively explore how advances in AI, automation and contemporary software practices can transform how teams build, test and evolve customer‑facing capabilities. You set group‑wide expectations for architecture, quality, security and operational maturity, while leading cross‑vertical initiatives that reduce systemic risk and enable teams to move faster without sacrificing reliability.

Your leadership ensures engineering teams are equipped with the right tools, practices and technical clarity to deliver high‑quality outcomes at pace, supporting dental practice automation and exceptional patient experiences for thousands of practices and millions of patients. You partner closely with Product, Design, Data, Security and Operations leaders to sequence multi‑quarter roadmaps, align investment to strategy and communicate clear, pragmatic trade‑offs to leadership. You champion responsible AI and LLM adoption as a core part of product engineering, accelerating developer effectiveness, shortening feedback loops and unlocking new customer‑facing capabilities, while remaining firmly aligned with our strategy.

What you'll do

  • You will be a leader of leaders, with 3-4 Team Leads/Engineering Managers reporting into you. You will be able to lead through others but also dive deep into the detail – technical, strategic and tactical – when necessary.
  • Set architectural direction and guardrails that improve scalability, security, performance and cost efficiency; identify structural technical risks early and drive organisational solutions.
  • Help define organisation-wide quality standards and patterns (code, testing, observability) and lead programs that reduce systemic technical debt and delivery friction across groups.
  • Champion responsible AI adoption: set guidance and standards for AI/LLM use in developer workflows and product features; measure impact on productivity and quality while managing risk.
  • Drive high engineering productivity and faster speed to market without compromising quality, reliability or maintainability.
  • Establish and uplift incident response maturity (on-call structures, SLOs, alert quality, playbooks) and lead preventative reliability initiatives that reduce incident volume and severity.
  • Collaborate in multi-quarter planning across verticals, sequence large initiatives, make dependency and capacity trade-offs and ensure predictable delivery at group scale.
  • Lead change governance at scale: ensure compliant, low risk change processes; align Engineering, Product, Data, Security, and Operations around a shared change lifecycle.
  • Build durable executive and cross-functional alignment; communicate strategy, decisions and trade-offs with clarity; anticipate and resolve misalignment early.
  • Shape org design and resourcing for your group: optimise spans/layers, team topology, and succession planning; anticipate future skill/capability needs and align headcount to strategy.
  • Define and track group-level engineering KPIs, including SLO attainment, MTTR and incident severity trends, change failure rate, deployment frequency, lead time for changes, build time, adoption of standards and cost efficiency, using insights to steer priorities.
  • Ensure alignment and delivery of our strategy across verticals, translating business goals into clear engineering outcomes.

As a People Leader You Will

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team, motivating and inspiring your team to reach and exceed all set targets and KPIs
  • Coach team members in best practices, fostering a culture of continuous development
  • Ensure all team members have clear, up-to-date Individual Development Plans (IDPs), and receive regular performance reviews and meaningful 1:1 conversations to support growth, engagement, and accountability
  • Maintain a trusting, collaborative environment, enabling the team to thrive
  • Lead the recruitment efforts for your team, identifying and hiring top talent
  • Promote an inclusive and diverse culture, in line with the Henry Schein One values

What you’ll bring with you

  • Extensive experience leading high-performing engineering teams across multiple verticals in a growth-stage or mature SaaS company, preferably coming from B2B background.
  • Experience of working in a shared responsibility leadership environment (Engineering, Product, Design and Data), taking strong accountability for your discipline area.
  • Ability to drive software delivery impact using AI tooling and technology in the software development lifecycle. including incident management, developer productivity, product delivery.
  • Ability to shape group design (team topology, spans/layers, succession) and anticipate future capability needs.
  • Strong ability to use data and anecdotal evidence to inform decisions and drive change.
  • Competence to pivot as priorities and needs change without losing sight of long-term strategy.
  • A curious mind: You want to explore the unknown and are brave enough to disrupt your own ways of working and inspire that curiosity in your teams.
  • Relentless focus on business and customer impact over raw technical output with an ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Practical understanding of governance and compliant change management in cloud environments.
